KM and Me

I am a Knowledge Manager with an IT services company.

Here is the story of how I became one...
One day I read about an internal job opportunity and applied for it. My intuition told me that it was an interesting role just what I wanted to move into but had no clue about Knowledge Management. A name on the mailer sounded like a familiar name so I shot a mail back thinking it was my friend, " So you have now become the GM for KM! Let me know when we can talk".
Thank God! the person across my current boss was sane and understood this was a case of mistaken identity. However he spent a good one hour in explaining to me about KM when we spoke for the first time. I said at the end of the call, but this is what I have been doing as part of all my previous roles.
I loved the fact KM was all about evangelization, marketing new ideas, being the change agent, a knowledge broker. Being an influence is what appealed to me.

I was doing well in my then role as Quality Co-ordinator so my seniors were not ready to let me go. They wanted me to do KM for the team but continue with them. They held on to me for a good six months and when they realized they could not brainwash me any further they let me be a Knowledge Manager but I would like to call my self a Knowledge Broker.
A Knowledge Broker because you don't possess it but make trade offs between the seeker and the needy.
